A winters day at the beach

Today Tom and I packed a picnic and headed to the beach. The beach closest to our house is on the south coast of the North Island and it’s wild; black sand, lots of rocks, dramatic hills above it, lots of creeks flowing across the road, and wind.

We walked along the 4×4 road past the camp site and wondered if we kept going if we could reach Wellington (Google maps says no). We passed roadside fennel that made the walk smell like aniseed and saw salt sprays sweeping across the water. Afterwards we fogged up the car eating warm bacon and egg pie, hot coffee and cold pikelets with raspberry jam.

I particularly like how the Thermos looks like a lighthouse in this last photo.

    Beautiful photos Emma.

  3. Hey! Yes you can walk all the way round to the bottom of the Orongorongo River and hit the Wainuiomata coast road. A long walk, but at various times they open the gates for cyclists, horse riders and there are 4×4 trips by arrangement. Some of the streams would have been a bit deep yesterday

  6. […] Have a picnic in a really wild or crazy place Bundle up warm and head to a wild and crazy place for a picnic. You can either picnic in the car or let the kids round around screaming until they’re completely stuffed. Here’s a good location. […]
